JEAN-FRANÇOIS PAUVROS & JØRGEN TELLER (Paris / Copenhague)

Friday october 16th, 13 h

Cinemes Texas

Bailèn, 205

Free admission

After his show in the Encontres en l’Espai Temps in 2014, Jørgen Teller comes back to the LEM with another improvisation session, this time with French guitarist Jean-François Pauvros. Teller is a Danish guitarist, musician in the broadest sense, with a long career behind and collaborations that include, for example, David (Pere Ubu) Thomas. Restless and multitalented, his activity has been carried out all over the world, with projects that span from guitar manipulation to composition for theatre and dance, the interaction with poets and taking part in conceptual events. His partner tonight is not second to anybody. Pauvros is a natural-born improviser who has played with, among others, Arto Lindsay and Evan Parker. His solo shows are well known for their rage, ability and even black humour. The sole certainty of what will arise from the shared stage between these two giants is with no doubt a reconsideration of the lim- its of this instrument. Superb opening for the LEM 2015.

Saturday october 17th, 19 h

GTS

Igualada, 10

Free admission

A publication born from the impact of a personal diary of a stranger on the head of its future director while he was on guard at the quarters cannot be a “usual” pub- lication. But this is the way that El Naufraguito (“the lit- tle shipwreck survivor”), was born, a handmade fanzine created by Ceferino Galán in 1989 that plays the role of the Official Bulletin of the Survivor Island. El Naufraguito has been awarded twice with the Best Fanzine Award at the Comic Venue of Barcelona (2003 and 2011). The sheets of its pages are cut out, fixed up and manipulated so that we can find some small surprises inside it. It deals with a great diversity of topics because the texts, full of irony and sometimes grazing the non-sense, are true experiences by (metaphoric) shipwreck survivors from across the world. At the end of El Naufraguito, within a marsupial sack, there is El Mininaufraguito, personally made by the survivors them-selves. The exhibition makes an historical tour across its 101 issues.

Sustainer (Àlex Alarcón), began experimenting with sequencers and synths in mid 90s. During this period, he released dub techno oriented stuff but his sound began to evolve towards more less-rhythm oriented music, near to ambient and electroacoustics . Recently, he recovered his interest in playing and processing real instruments, using modular systems, and amplified everyday objects. Whilst recovering from a serious health condition, Alarcón began working with very limited equipment at arm’s reach: small recorders, pedals and other devices soon became a processing chain through which to feed shortwave radio recordings, giving raise to Radiolas, his last work, a metaphoric ocean of harmonic noise, with waves of frequency that collide and lap at the edges of one another. The sound richness emerging from it, invites the listener to become drowned in the intricacy of distended radio waves.

ENCONTRE EN L’ESPAI TEMPS

Collecting donations at the end of the show

La setena vida de Kaspar Schwarz (a man with a cat’s face who appears now and then under different identities all across the XXth Century) is a novel by Carles Pradas and VAIRA is a kind of soundtrack of it, com- posed and performed alive by Olivia Mateu (Tirana) and Albert Espuña (Gúdar). The images that go along with the staging have been prepared by Pradas himself. This piece is made of four moments corresponding to four chapters of the book: La Infància, La Gran Guerra, Efectes Paranormals and Kaspar Schwarz finalment. It’s a sounding landscape where the music – agreeably hypnotic with some repetitive fragments appealing to melancholy rather than to hysteria – melts with the images and words and the audience feels transported to the vague uni- verse of the novel. VAIRA does not show up frequently on stages so that this is a unique opportunity to enjoy it alive.

Self-defined as a “psycho-acoustic clarinet duo”, The International Nothing is a Berlin based duet formed by clarinettists and composers Kai Fagaschinski and Michael Thieke in the year 2000. They have released three records with the Japanese label Ftarri and have performed all over the world. All compositions are made by both musicians together during a long trial and error process evaluated by the hearing of Fagaschinski and Thieke until a satisfactory result shows up. By using advanced techniques such as difference tones, beat frequencies and multiphonics, they achieve a kind of electroacoustic-like music, but only with two clarinets. In this way, their pieces achieve a quiet depth of an outstanding beauty, with multiple layers of rare warmth. Don’t miss it.

Kasper T. Toeplitz is a Polish composer and bass player living in Paris whose activity spans from orthodox writing to electronic noise music. He visited the LEM 1997 with Sleaze Art, his powerful orchestra formed by electric basses and guitars. He has been awarded with a number of prizes from festivals around the world and he carries out a huge activity. With influences ranging from Stockhausen to Godflesh, Toeplitz has integrated computers into his work, as a tool of com- position as well as a live instrument, working on the sheer electronic noise or in conjunction with traditional instruments. At this occasion, Toeplitz will play the pieces Elephant & Cat (own composition) and Fluster (by the late Zbignew Karkowski). The listening of Toeplitz music is challenging because he call the traditional notion of beauty into question but, if one puts the required attention, he obtains the reward of a truly interesting and unique experience.

Synaesthesia: sensorial experience consisting in the association of several senses by which the perception in a sensorial sector is accompanied by perceptions in one or several other sectors. The synaesthetic experience proposed by the LEM will take place once again at the Casa Almirall. Music, image, words and gastronomy served altogether in sensorial capsules at our multidisciplinary lab. Marco Bellonzi, from the GulaLab project where art, science and gastronomy meet, will cook some snacks with ingredients of an audacious coupling, always holding some industrially pre-cooked element, as a label of our urban and urgent times. This label, with its lights and shades, will bring the food together with the music by percussionist Patxi Valera who will use a self-created instrument, the “aquaphone”, capable of generating sound out from water dripping. In synchrony, Víctor Bonetarbolí, poet, will pour the verses to this peculiar appetiser.

In the beginning, Zozobra (Antonio González, a former member of bands such as Enough or Too Much) arises from the need of leaving the form of standard songs behind. Assisted by his most familiar instruments, such as a Casio SK-5, a loop station, voice and a very personal inner world, he resumed the most spoken aspect of his work, a kind of spoken word, and he started to make concerts without a pause, in a continuous fashion. Some of them are thematic and in the course of the show, a kind of story is being developed while chords, words and recordings are being thrown at it. Some others are of a more improvised type but the aim is always to avoid doing twice the same show and to collapse in front of the audience if necessary. Sharp and intense live shows, somewhere between noise and lyricism. Music for sinking.

Radio shows, festival production, self-edited artisanal records, tributes, fanzines, readymade, mail art, videos, manifests, blogs, multimedia performances, etc. Among them, the most impressive type of action used by 25 HOMBRES to convey their messages are the sound collages and performances, with the stress put in aspects such as anti- Dada, confusion, magic, industrial culture, subconscious and social criticism, with pas- sages close to noise and industrial music, the whole tinted by a provocative sense of humor.

Bruital Orgasme is Fil & Nath, from Belgium, a dark, organic and a bit surrealistic, duo. They play with frequencies, sounds they record during their travels, homemade sound generators, sounds from many sources (such as old vinyls, turntables without records, radios, tapes). They give intense and physical performances with the aim of reaching the bodily effects of noise as music. Reaching the point where harsh noise is not considered unpleasant demands a training of the senses, a lack of restraint, allowing all sounds to be music, emancipating noise from its mimetic function, abstracting it as purely aesthetic. Past lives include performances across Europe and Canada. “An overload of the nervous system, maybe reflecting our inner and outer chaos, absorbing the listener into an ecstatic black hole, just like an orgasm”.

INAUGURACIÓ EXPOSICIÓ

As a result of one of those twists of fate that do not need to be understood, such as the accidental and fortunate encounter between an artist and a musician around the neighbourhood or that of a youngster and a cannibal in a bed in New England, Xesco Mercé shows up in Gràcia to introduce Melvillíada (contes de navegants), a plastic art project, kind of spin-off of the one he made last spring together with the painter Ramon Roig, at the La Xina A.R.T. gallery. Far from being caught in the trap of undertaking the huge enterprise of pretending to illustrate Moby Dick, or, presumptuously, trying to decode all its cryptic signals, Melvillíada does it from the poetics of the simplest drawing. A handful of small works that are, at the same time, provision, Santa Barbara, loot and naturalistic document of an exceptional journey offered by the reading of Melville. In a natural way, the Melvillíada will yield to Melvilliana, a collective reading of Moby Dick fragments at the very GTS headquarters.

LECTURA COL·LECTIVA DE MOBY DICK

Free admitance

The brilliant career of Herman Melville began its decline when he delivered Moby Dick to his editor, a hybrid between adventure fiction and a treatise on human nature which sunk the author in life, but which later praised him up to immortality. Both Melville and the book that fixed him forever in the man’s memory, forms a kind of extraordinary kaleidoscope of the great travel literature of all times. Melvilliana, a collective Moby Dick reading, was born to celebrate such tragic happiness, preceded by the opening of the exhibition Melvillíada, at the very GTS headquarters. Once again: “collective”; we don’t expect you only as a listener, but we also wish to hear you reading your favourite fragment of Moby Dick. Four copies of the book will be at your disposal, in Spanish, Catalan, English and French, but if you wish to bring your own copy in your favourite language, both of you will be welcomed.

Triulet is also under the influence of contemporary music and poetry, in the search of a raw and intense brightness.

A planet which they know pretty well thanks to the ties that they have been building with music from everywhere, particularly those most hidden kinds of music in forgotten, and often oppressed and disregarded, corners. Some examples are their collaborations with Chinese folk-icon Xiao He or with members of the klezmer orchestra Kruzenshtern i Parohod; the invention of a solar-powered sound system for concerts in India or their recent experimental opera: À l’Abri des Regards Indiscrets, upon which, together with their last project of radio theatre, Vialka will base their concert tonight. Punk-folk? Gypsy rock? No matter, the LEM audience has already had a couple of occasions to enjoy their frenetic and stimulating alive shows, conducted with technical mastery.

Rock Band, plastic artists and performers alike, they are authors of 6 records, sound installations around the world and exhibitions and they have collaborated with musicians such as Carles Santos, Vinicio Capossela, Pascal Comelade, Joan Saura and Pierre Bastien. Between 1986 and 1988 he created the dark-chamber ensemble Kino Glaz and in 1991 he joined the well know band Kirlian Camera, with whom he worked for seven years releasing several albums and performing live throughout Europe. He’s currently working as a solo artist, focusing on site-specific installations, dance and theatre sound- tracks, as well as with the experimental duos Dream Weapon Ritual, Candor Chasma, Sarang, Hidden Reverse and Resonance Behaviour and the improvi- sation ensemble A Sphere Of Simple Green.

Like a cell vesicle split from the cytoplasm of Das Synthetische Mischgewebe, the duo formed by Guido Hübner and Samuel Loviton has concentrated its activities on the musical part of this interdisciplinary collective, in the crossing between sound installations and performance concerts. Heirs of concrete music, the group works with assemblages of ordinary objects brought into motion by different types of electric motors, magnets, air and heat and even manual manipulation in a way that produces a succession of movements, whether brief or long that superpose each other and which turn progressively more unpre- dictable, amplifying their sounds by customized speakers. This creates mechanical and electromagnetic environments in which the listening experience is as particular as the elusive sound world it tries to seize.

After releasing a cassette tape of homonymous title with the label RØAM in 2013, the band released at the end of 2014 a conceptual record about the progress and decline of the Industrial Era as opposing forces in a kind of metaphor of the times we are living, El Nuevo Hombre (La Vida es un Mus Discos), highly figurative, dark, minimalistic and nostalgic. This record, coated by electronic sound, piercing rhythms and well-defined vocals, is full of references to Kraftwerk, Joy Division and even Esplendor Geométrico, in a fresh and audacious revision of synth pop as well as the darkest New Wave.
