FLOY KROUCHI (París)

Thursday September 29, 1 pm.

Cinemes Texas.

C/ Bailén, 205.

Free entrance.

French bassist Floy Krouchi started in the world of music by founding the noise and industrial dub band Mufucage in 1994. Her music language has broadened by the learning of both oriental music and the use of diverse devices. In 2003, she made a stay in India in order to study raga music with Pandit Hindraj Divekar and this lead to a multimedia piece named Sakhiri, as well as to the record A Stream of Love, along with the singer Sumathi. Exceptional composer, she has worked with artists from various disciplines all around the world, making sound installations, web-art and music for dance and experimental cinema. Krouchi finds herself currently immersed in the work in progress Bass Holograms, where she investigates the use of low frequencies as well as the possibilities of recreating inaudible sounds through her augmented bass and electronic devices. Pure experimentation for the opening of the festival.

De Val a Dada (From Val to Val)

Wednesday October 5, 6 pm.

GTS.

C/ Igualada, 10.

Manuel de Val shows a selection of works assigned to those imaginary artists of his own who are most in debt to the Dada movement. From the quick-witted appropiattionist heteronymous Francesc Claret with his Ready-readymade, auténtico botellero de Marcel Duchamp to the fictitious invaluable second-rate artist Santiago Montoro Weinberg with his La madre que me parió, 2016, through Manuel de Val himself. You can visit the exhibition during the whole month of October at the Gràcia Territori Sonor headquarters every Wednesday at the occasion of the Encounters in the Space-Time from 19:30, as well as during the rest of the weekdays by agreed visits.

MIA ZABELKA, MIQUEL JORDÀ (Barcelona)

Wednesday October 5, 8 pm.

GTS.

C/ Igualada, 10.

ENCOUNTER IN THE SPACE-TIME.

Free donation for the artist at the end.

An Encounter in the Space – Time between two improvisers with worldwide experience. Sax player Miquel Jordà has gone across the world several times in order to record the highest possible diversity of the sounds of our planet. This work has been collected in the book and DVD Sobre la pell del món and has been exhibited at the Caixaforum in Barcelona. Mia Zabelka, an Austrian sound artist and violinist, is one of the top exponents of experimental music for violin, both acoustic and electric, the limits of which fade in her hands as do those of genres in the search of new horizons for her language. They will present The Last Border, where the duo creates a sound universe aiming at making us dream with the border between the real and the imaginary, the experience and the dream… strings, sax, percussions, voice, silences, glances and gestures in the sound cartography of an unknown territory.

fuego

FUEGO (Barcelona)

Thursday October 6, 9 pm.

Almo2Bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

5 € (Two concerts).

Fuego is a visual and sound improvisation trio, which uses randomness and error as a creative weapon. By using synthesizers, samplers, radios, webcams, low fi projections, oscillators, etc., they take us to a place where noise and harmony only depend on our benchmark. Fuego is formed by Aldana (visual and more), Pope and Pablo Miranda (synthesizers, mixer and more). Each live performance of this trio is presented to us as an opportunity to explore new frontiers, a musical adventure through sidereal ambiences and repetitive rhythms, minimalist visuals and live cinema. The Martian dub is added to the soundscape, where fantastic machines found in the trash have a second chance. As if it were the electronic paleolithic, by launching images to the rhythm of impossible arpeggios and warming up our engines, we strike stones to make fire.

caries

CARIES (Barcelona)

Thursday October 6, 10 pm.

Almo2Bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

5 € (Two concerts).

Caries is a solid musical project that offers an explosive experimental fusion by gathering different styles. This sextet, consisting of Chio Allin (trombone), Paul Finkelstein (trumpet), Tomy Littel (baritone sax) Nico Retrete (guitar), Claudio Inferno (bass) and Harry (drums), was founded in 2009, after many hours of rehearsal, with the commitment to propose a different material. A work made from the diverse musical influences of its components, brought together through improvisation and experimentation. Caries lands on the LEM to offer its deployment of sounds, characterized by a strong rhythmic drive, with dizzying changes that lead us from one style to another (hard rock, punk, jazz, hardcore, noise…), and occasionally giving way to highly sensitive melodic passages. Musical experimentation and unlimited imagination.

walter-thompson-1

WALTER THOMPSON THE BARCELONA SOUNDPAINTING ORCHESTRA (New York City)

Friday October 7, 9 pm.

Centre Cívic La Sedeta.

C/ Sicília, 321.

5 €.

An old friend of the LEM returns to the festival. The multi-awarded Walter Thompson invented Soundpainting, the universal sign language for the live multidisciplinary composition, a distant 1974 in Woodstock and, since then, this language has never stopped growing, possessing currently over 1200 gestures used by the soundpainter (the “instantaneous composer”) to give indications to the performers and, sometimes, even to the public. Thompson has gone across the world in order to spread his method with concerts, workshops and talks. Gràcia Territori Sonor has assembled a multidisciplinary Orchestra for this occasion. Musicians, dancers, actors and poets will devote the previous day to a workshop/rehearsal under Thompson’s conduction who will carry out an instantaneous composition with his usual sensitivity and expressivity in a predictably unforgettable event.

vilanova4

MARC VILANOVA (Capellades)

Saturday October 8, 9:30 pm.

La Sonora de Gràcia.

C/ Riera de Sant Miquel, 59.

5 € (Two concerts).

Marc Vilanova’s work is focused on the exploration of the instrument, as well as ongoing research into new sounds, techniques and expressions connected with technology and other arts. His approach coherently encapsulates both performative feature and sound installation and his works have been presented in many festivals around the world. For LEM 2016, Vilanova will present MUT _Solo Saxophone. The first half of the solo is completely acoustic. Vilanova is muting the instrument in different ways creating a totally electronic sound. In the second half, Vilanova includes live electronics that process the sound of the saxophone in real time, he also plays with feedbacks and microphoning. To make this possible, he creates a hand made pedal that works with Arduino. Although the system is more complex, gesture and energy are still strongly present. The computer is hidden in order to keep the face-to-face connection between musician and audience.

FREE ART THREE (Barcelona)

Saturday October 8, 10:30 pm.

La Sonora de Gràcia.

C/ Riera de Sant Miquel, 59.

5 € (Two concerts).

Free Art Three is an acoustic project originated in 2011 by three trumpeters (Iván González, Pol Padrós and Julian Sanchez) from the the great band Free Art Ensemble. These three outstanding musicians are a good example of the diversity, creativity and quality of what we might call the new scene of free jazz and free improvisation. The live performance of this trio is a real journey into the world of sounds and, at the same time, a defense of trumpetistic sound viewed from a free perspective. Motifs that lead to variations, passages with room for soloists and various instrumental combinations that provide different textures, created from percussion, horns, flutes, bells, plates, seeds… Free Art Three proposes a speech that crosses different languages and musical styles, including jazz, classical and contemporary improvisation.

PIERRE BASTIEN (Rotterdam)

Friday October 14, 10 pm.

MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona).

Pl/ dels Àngels, 1.

10 €.

Pierre Bastien visits the LEM once again with his mechanical orchestra, Mecanium, made of Meccano pieces that, by means of a series of engines, play traditional instruments from all over the world, such as the Chinese lute, the Moroccan bendir, the Javanese saron, the koto or the violin as well as objects and even the pieces of the famous architecture game themselves. Bastien can be described without objections as magician, mad scientist, poet of mechanics and one of the most influent experimental creators, imbedded in Dada and futurism, creator of an hypnotic and sensual music that, at the same time, cannot (or does not want to) avoid the evocation of the creative freedom of childhood both in the sound and in the visual aspects of his shows. With 16 solo records published since 1988, Bastien has worked with Robert Wyatt, Aphex Twin and Pascal Comelade, among others and has achieved a number of sound installations. One of the highlights of the LEM 2016, don’t miss it!

metacentro

PATXI VALERA, ÁNGEL FARALDO (Ferrol / A Coruña)

Metacentro

Saturday October 15, 10 pm.

Soda Acústic.

C/ Guilleries, 6.

5 € (Two concerts)

The metacentre is the variable reference where the center of stable balance is expressed on a floating body in a state of rest or in motion, as a result of the performance of two opposing forces represented by the center of gravity and the center of thrust or pressure. Drummer Patxi Valera, restless artist, founding member of Kozmic Muffin and Parto trio, and developer of the prototype of the Aquaphone system, comes back to the LEM accompanied by electronic music composer Angel Faraldo, member of the Vertixe Sonora Ensemble, who is an improviser and active musician committed to the creation and promotion of experimental music. Metacentro proposes a sound exploration: we depart, we hear, we float, we travel through the storm of codes and representations and, by drawing imaginary lines between multidimensional spaces, we keep our balance, to get to the sea of silence.

MUT TRIO (Barcelona)

Saturday October 15, 11 pm.

Soda Acústic.

C/ Guilleries, 6.

5 € (Two concerts).

2395 seconds was the duration of their second record – 1374 that of the first. MUT Trio, the band that pays tribute to the silence through their instantaneous music – as well as the non instantaneous one, is a group formed by sax player Miguel Fernández, guitarist Albert “Tito” Juan and drummer Oriol “Uri” Roca: three adaptable and all-terrain musicians with a long experience and a fertile activity in the jazz and improvised music scene from Barcelona. “Sound conspirators” in words of Fernández, MUT Trio offers a song repertoire where they melt free improvisation with written compositions. Misty avant-garde jazz, dominated by bareness, heterodoxy and contrast with a unique goal to achieve “a music that develops by herself”, they say. Since they released they first album in 2012, they have published two more records, 2395 y 3369. They will present this year their forth CD, My Ship, with the collaboration of double-bass player Masa Kamaguchi. An adrift travel through both the plate and heavy sea.

ÀGAPE with ANNA PANTINAT, JAUME PANTALEÓN & QUIM DIAZ (Barcelona)

Sunday October 16, 1 pm.

Casa Almirall.

C/ Joaquín Costa, 33.

Free entrance.

An experience that will atomise you senses, agglutinated in the inner-physical space of the Casa Almirall. This is what you will find in the framework of the Àgape. An inner space where several mixtures take place: letters with chairs, the environment with environmental sounds or palates with spoons. This year, Anna Pantinat, Jaime L. Pantaleón and Quim Diaz celebrate the centenary of DADA with an uncertain, impossible and cabaret-like proposal, that melts the senses in order to offer a heavy meal. Pantinat sings, plays keyboards, the theremin and is the composer in Pentina’t Lula. She is a poet as well and she contributes to Gent Normal and Revista de Letras (La Vanguardia). Jaime L. Pantaleón is a musician with a long and eclectic career, with over 20 records published with groups such as 12twelve, Cuzo, Alone 2011. Quim Diaz is a graphic designer and a freelance cooker, since forever.

lois_sauleda

IGNACIO LOIS, ORIOL SAULEDA (Buenos Aires / Barcelona)

Wednesday October 19, 9 pm.

GTS.

C/ Igualada, 10.

ENCOUNTER IN THE SPACE-TIME.

Free donation for the artist at the end.

The list of collaborations and projects in which the Argentinean composer and multiinstrumentalist Ignacio Lois has been involved with since he arrived at Barcelona in 2003 is impressive: Misaluba, Dedo, Canvis Vells, Le Petit Ramon, Carles Andreu, Joan Saura, Triulet, the BIBLois is a true all-terrain music explorer capable of entering the territory of progressive rock as he does with classical music, free improvisation, computer-conducted music… on the other hand, the poet Oriol Sauleda has always worked with improvisation because the written word remains forever and this scares him. He never improvises alone; he needs someone with whom starting a dialogue and fade together. His bedside musicians are Xavier Vallverdú “Yayovah” and Marc Egea, although the progressive rock band EVE caught him and they now dance together. Conditions are therefore set for an unforgettable Encounter in the Space – Time.

turingtarpit

TURING TARPIT (Barcelona)

Thursday October 20, 9 pm.

Almo2bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

5 € (Two concerts).

Turing Tarpit, the duet formed by Ramon Casamajó (trumpet, effects, beatbox and synthesizer) and Ferran Gavín (electric guitar and effects), decided to withdraw into a studio for the purpose of experimenting with different ideas accrued over a long period of live performance. The result is The International Obfuscated Music Contest, an album in which the sound of the group can be identified, while also providing new items, such as drumer Frank Rudow (ex-member of Manta Ray). Rudow is a special guest involved in the production of this work, which also features the participation of the graphic artist Laia Gonzalez. The LEM gives us the opportunity to attend the post-recording facet of the group, where Turing Tarpit becomes a renewed mutant unit, fully engaged in an ongoing search for the imperfect balance between noise and silence, error and success, electronics and acoustics.

galiana1

GALIANA & SAAVEDRA (València / Santiago de Compostela)

Thursday October 20, 10 pm.

Almo2bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

Their deep and bursting improvisations are an invitation for us to penetrate into nature and to start a dialogue with the intangible sounds and with the silence in the search of the souls hidden behind each blade of life, behind each stone. A tour de force for the creators and a fascinating pleasure for the listeners.

ALFREDO COSTA MONTEIRO (Porto)

Friday 21 de October, 22 h.

MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona).

Pl/ dels Àngels, 1.

5 € (Two concerts)

Alfredo Costa Monteiro is an outstanding sound artist linked to multiple fields of art creation and experimentation, which holds a long international career and an extensive discography. He is currently developing several projects with artists such as Ferran Fages, Ruth Barberán, Lali Barrière, Luca Venitucci, Jonas Kocher, Adriana Villa and Luis Macias. His works, mainly lowfi character, are generated from unstable processes, conceptual constructions or formal systems of extreme simplicity, even puzzling. Costa Monteiro uses different instruments (accordion, turntables, guitar, electro-acoustic devices, resonant objects or a simple piece of paper) and its music moves through dynamics that reaches extremes levels in which volume nearly takes shape. Hypnotic and noisy sound poems, that sometimes defi comprehension but never leave anyone unmoved.

ALESSANDRO OLLA & JUAN MANUEL CASTRILLO (Sardegna / Jujuy)

Score For No Land

Saturday October 22, 10 pm.

Soda Acústic.

C/ Guilleries, 6.

5 € (Two concerts)

This project is the result of a collaboration between two artists who share the same technical and aesthetic concerns regarding the use of sound as a creative material. Alessandro Olla‘s skills, forged in the classic studies of piano and composition, are soon tempted by the freest and risky possibilities of sonic creation, improvisation, experimentation and electronic music. His output converges with the work of Juan Manuel Castrillo, sound technician, percussionist and improviser, wich is focused mainly on phonography, composition of soundscapes and sound installations. Castrillo is founder of Earwitness label and has released albums on several companies in different countries. Score for no Land is a performance born out of electroacoustic improvisation, exploring the boundaries between sounds from recognizable sources and others completely abstract.

ARNAU OBIOLS LIBÈRRIM (Barcelona)

Saturday October 22, 11 pm.

Soda Acústic.

C/ Guilleries, 6.

5 € (Two concerts).

Born in La Seu d’Urgell (Catalan Pyrenees), drummer Arnau Obiols is an active member of the jazz, folk and improvised music scene. As many other young musicians formed in music colleges – in his case the Taller de Musics and the ESMUC, Obiols is a musician of an outstanding level who puts all his savoir faire at the service of curiosity, heterodoxy and, above all, audacity. He presented his first work, Projecte Pirene, in 2013, homage to the traditional culture from the Pyrenees. In Libèrrim, he not only gathers some of the best improvisers together (Pol Padrós, trumpet; Marcel·lí Bayer, clarinets; Míriam Fèlix, cello and Amaiur González, tuba, but he approaches sound avant-garde through melody and sound abstraction, the treatment of orchestration and the promotion of instantaneous composition. In a statement to the online magazine Núvol, Obiols defines the spirit of his proposal: “usually, my composition is the flavour of the song: It is like I was saying to musicians: this will be the subject, but I want you to liberate yourself’.” No doubt, this is entire freedom (Libèrrim).

NÚRIA MARTÍNEZ VERNIS, RAMON SOLÉ (Barcelona)

Wednesday October 26, 8 pm.

GTS.

C/ Igualada, 10.

ENCOUNTER IN THE SPACE-TIME.

Free donation for the artist at the end.

What can be expected from the confluence of the very personal grammars of Núria Martínez Vernis and Ramon Solé? Or, in other words, we are pleased to introduce you to the encounter in the space-time of one of the most powerful voices of the current Catalan poetry with a guitar player armed with a very personal and suggestive language. Núria Martínez-Vernis has performed hundreds of poetry recitals over the past few years, besides the release of three books, among which we would like to highlight Deix on Dir, an overwhelming work that she has presented in a music format as well, both on record and alive surrounded by outstanding musicians. Ramon Solé has been a founder member of key music projects such as Baf, Sboro and Tropopausa and he is currently involved in the super-group Setsfree in addition to a number of collaborations. He sometimes makes his guitar speak and it becomes water, sky or glass while Nuria’s voice is like a meandering torrent flooding with rains of peace and calming down with silences of war. Welcome to the Mediterranean.

DAVID SOLER, SUSO SÁIZ, XAVI MOLERO (Barcelona / Madrid)

SMS

Thursday October 27, 9:30 pm.

Espai Jove La Fontana.

C/ Gran de Gràcia, 190-192.

5 € (Two concerts).

SMS is an improvisation which travels among free ambient and experimentation, by developing intense soundscapes and hypnotic constructions. Suso Sáiz is a renowned composer, guitarist, arranger and music producer, a pioneer of avant-garde music and new age in Spain, whose work has always been linked to experimentation. David Soler, one of the most active and chameleonic guitarists of the Catalan scene, has worked with musicians like Jonah Smith, Guilia Valle or Nena Daconte. Soler is constantly reinventing his sound by combining the rawness of the clean guitar with the exhaustive exploitation of pedals and electronic tools. The third pillar of this trio is Xavi Molero, a versatile drummer and an outstanding name on indie-pop scene. Molero combines the activity of his bands and the collaboration with artists and groups from diverse backgrounds.

SYLVAIN RIFFLET

SYLVAIN RIFFLET MECHANICS (París)

Thursday October 27, 10:30 pm.

Espai Jove La Fontana.

C/ Gran de Gràcia, 190-192.

5 € (Two concerts).

Mechanics, the record by French sax and clarinet player Sylvain Rifflet with his Alphabet quartet (Joce Mienniel, flute and kalimba; Benjamin Flament, percussion and treated metals; Philippe Gordiani, guitars) has recently been nominated to the best French jazz record 2016 award. Rifflet has been the sideman of well-known musicians such as Michel Portal, Aldo Romano and Joey Baron and he has taken part in a number of projects since the beginning of the century. Mechanics, a hypnotic and retrofuturist record, full of “fertile repetitions” (Jazz News), has received all kinds of compliments from the French press and Rifflet has been called “the mechanic of tempo” (France Musique). In Mechanics’ songs, the rhythm section is indistinguishable from the melodic lines that recall both the gears of a precision watch and the flight of a flock of starlings, thanks to the virtuosity of these four musicians. No doubt, one of the high points of the LEM.

SARA HERCULANO (Badajoz)

Friday October 28, 9 pm.

Centre Cívic Convent Sant Agustí.

C/ Comerç, 36.

7 € (Two concerts).

Life begins with a cooing of cells and galaxies, a machine made of porous entrails, and ends with the roar of the air which oxidizes the gear. This is La máquina hablante, the proposal that Sara Herculano brings to LEM. Herculano is an artist from Badajoz, graduated in Digital Arts, who makes music by combining her academic training with sound experimentation. He has worked as a sound artist in different multidisciplinary projects and has participated in numerous festivals, such as A-Sonora (Madrid) or LEM (Barcelona). His compositions are based on a prism that travels from the soundtrack to the matrix of the sound act. An exercise revealed as a deployment of acoustic short-stories, which combines the taste for handling of old devices and the use of recovered recordings of everyday life. In this session, Herculano will share the stage with life visuals created by artist Cisco Bellabestia.

25HOMBRES (Barcelona)

Friday October 28, 10 pm.

Centre Cívic Convent Sant Agustí.

C/ Comerç, 36.

7 € (Two concerts).

This multifocal intervention cell has been operating for 13 years as a guerrilla squad in the jungle of pusillanimity, self-absorption and snobbism. Owners of a strong broadcasting career, with an important legacy on several radio stations such as Ràdio PICA and Ràdio Contrabanda (Los Des-Conciertos de 25HOMBRES, ARTE&RUIDO, Ruido Azul…), well experienced in actionism, performance and post-nuclear situationism, authors of pathogenic claims and pathological imprecations, and publishers of highly flammable recordings, they use an endless list of resources in order to cause short circuits and dismantle the well-off frequencies of reality and its mirages. 25HOMBRES is constantly looking for new ways of improving his own theory of catastrophe. The action No ens cal patir per res is a celebration of disaster, the number 13 in the year of the death of Bowie. 25HOMBRES in rock style? Maybe not.

JACO (Barcelona)

Saturday October 29, 9 pm.

Almo2Bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

5 € (Three concerts).

Jaco is the solo project, started in 2010, of the restless musician from Barcelona Larry Rodríguez (Ojos Sin Rostro, Isards, etc.), cofounder of the collective and promoters Detakon as well as of the new label Aceleradora. Jaco released his first EP, Las Escultoras, on last June, where he mixes some of his sonic preferences such as electronics, hip-hop, dub, techno, soundtracks or psychedelics and all of this with an obvious “dark” vocation. Voice, synthesizers, oscillators, knives and metals owing to creating and manipulating sounds that mix with surrealistic lyrics, with an open meaning, inspired in elements such as his dreams understood as a modification of time that melts past, present and future and breaks with the idea of reality of wakefulness. New meanings are born from dreams and, because they are absurd and unreal, they are more accurate and precise. We invite you to meet the raw and personal universe of Jaco.

SHOEG (Barcelona)

Saturday October 29, 10 pm.

Almo2bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

5 € (Three concerts).

Shoeg is a personal project by Carlos Martorell, electronic musician who works between the synthetic experimentation and granular sampling, with the purpose of crossing interdisciplinary lines. Martorell, member of Ensemble Topográfic, has been involved in several recordings for Boira Discos (Tanz, .nfo, Data Center…) and has collaborated with Núria Guiu contemporary dance projects. The retrospective nature of his music evokes unlived landscapes, which however we find it quite familiar. Clippings and reflections of the past, and lost recordings resting in a drawer, which get recycled by recovering a new shape, transmitting both sweetness of the past and hope for future at the same time. Martorell visits the LEM to show his electronics, vapourish and wraparound, and to recreate the warm atmosphere that characterizes his recordings.

GRÖSSO (Barcelona)

Saturday October 29, 11 pm.

Almo2bar.

C/ Bruniquer, 59-61.

5 € (Three concerts).

Carlos Falanga, argentinian musician resident in Barcelona is known for being one of the greatest jazz drummers of Barcelona. He frequently performs with prominent jazz figures such as Marco Mezquida, Carme Canela and Jorge Rossy, and he leads his own quartet. Falanga is also a great composer and performer of experimental electronic music. Inspired by Com Truise, Raymond Scott and Aphex Twin, a few months ago he started a project entitled Grosso, which includes synthesizers and drum machines with vintage sounds. The purpose is to create a melodic dancing music, evocative and addictive, located between the downtempo, the synthwave and the experimental electronic music. Falanga compositions have been recorded in La Isla studios, and produced by Pablo Miranda. Kid Stardust is the first album of this project, released by the electronic music label from Los Angeles, Sunlinxx Records. With Grosso we discovered a little-known facet of an extraordinary versatile musician.
