OPENING CONCERT

photo: Anna Sandrini

Ever-changing and unpredictable, Sergi Sirvent is one of the best pianists and composers of the lasts generations in our jazz. He is also known for his experimenter facet from the starting point of the avant-garde jazz language.  A good example of this is the proposal Trumpet Affairs, in which he shifts from the piano to the trumpet, instrument he started playing in 2000, but with which he didn’t lead any project so far.

In the company of two all-terrain musicians, double-bass player David Mengual and drummer Ramon Prats, Sirvent searches a sound close to beauty by means of improvisation, nuance, aerialism, hidden harmony and the parsimonious – and pleasant- drifting. A way of doing things immortalized in the wonderful record Likewise, that he will present at the LEM 2018.

Composer Sofia Faria wonders if, in a world in which communication is something that has already been given, the use of non-verbal languages can be the solution for a deeper dialogue. This is how Dullmea was born, after a long career through classical and contemporary music, jazz and theatre composition. Starting from minimalist proposals, she experiments with her voice and various elements of sound modification, improvising on previously composed structures and pieces. In her first concert in these lands, Dullmea will present a lot of new material and will revisite her acclaimed album, Keter (2016). The music of Dullmea invites the listener to an attentive and active participation in a sound trip to establish a dialogue without words and a reflection on the richness of the simple, true expression, and on the importance of vulnerability in the communicative act.

In 2007, Jorge Martorell Loriente presented the piece for saxes and electronics Pour soi même at the LEM. We invite again this composer, sax player and improviser whose versatility forces us to introduce him as a musician that has made the transversal approach as the principle of his action and the constant research as his working routine. Hi career crosses chamber music and symphonic orchestra, jazz, creation for dance and theatre and improvisation with the sax family. This is the format of his new show, Tu, ho sents!!!, conducted by pOpE, a child in an adult body who expresses himself as a sax and steps on stage to make us feel all the things that a journey to freedom and self-honesty can provide us. A creation in real time for sharing, lively, dynamic and unique.

GEMMA LLORET (Barcelona)

Saturday 13th october, 23h

NOTA 79

Vallirana 79

ticket 7€ (2 concerts)

photo: Noemi Elias Bascuñana

After a few years away from the stages, the keyboard player of the legendary band Ego: Trip, and also collaborator in many other musical projects, reappeared at the end of 2017 with Sonder, a splendid album where she changes the synthesisers for the piano to make an emotional and introspective journey that, while allowing to dive in it, works out throughout space (think of ambient, furniture music, repetitive minimalism and interest in popular melodic heritage). The great feat of Gemma Lloret is not to waive the influences of contemporary popular music when it comes to express herself in a pianistic language that has the effusions of Satie, Mompou, Debussy, Mertens or Falla. This update is the key of Sonder: It transports the sonic universe of the author to the acoustic piano with the grammars of some composers of the 20th century, which gave a new expression to this instrument, in order to create a music that is fully current, mature and very personal.

SIMONE WEIßENFELS & BERT STEPHAN (Leipzig/ Dresden)

Friday 19th October, 22h

NOTA 79

Vallirana 79

ticket 7€

“Free jazz without jazz”. This is how Simone Weißenfels (piano and laptop) and Bert Stephan (trumpet and fiscorn) define the improvisation sessions they have been doing since they met in 2008, coming from very different musical contexts. Since the mid-80s, Weißenfels is one of the most versatile German artists in terms of contemporary music and improvisation, with a palette of styles ranging from noise to ambient, and has worked with artists from around the world. Also in the mid-80s, Stephan founded the well-known rock-fusion group DEKAdance, which is still touring the planet, and of which soon he became its extroverted frontman. Together, Weißenfels and Stephan practice a risky unscrupulous improvisation, delicate and abrasive at the same time, by using lunatic scales and melodies.

ANNIKA FRANCKE & JULIÁN ELVIRA (Bremen / Cuenca)

Saturday 20th October, 21h

CENTRE CÍVIC LA SEDETA

Sicília 321

ticket 5€ (2 concerts)

The Francke-Elvira duo (sax and subcontrabass flute) comes from the interest in avant-garde music, improvisation and the searching for new creative formulas that these two musicians share. Francke moves between jazz, free improvisation and experimentation with sound textures. Elvira, virtuoso and versatile flutist, combines his facets as a performer and researcher (creator of the Prónomo flute) with formative actions on the transversal flute and Prónomo flute throughout the world. Their work mixes the scream and the whisper. Each combination of rhythm or melody and each sound development is the result of a meticulous effort to exhaust the timbral possibilities. The consequence of all this is a rigorous exploration of the secrets that hide their instruments.

MIS (MOVIMENT D’INSURRECCIÓ SONORA) (Barcelona)

Saturday 20th October, 22h

CENTRE CÍVIC LA SEDETA

Sicília 321

ticket 5€ (2 concerts)

MIS (Sonic Insurrection Movement), founded by Mireia Tejero and David G. Aparicio, is a collective of instant music based on gestural conduction, that is, a series of signs expressed by the conductor. The result is an intense and unrepeatable work and, as the name suggests, insurrectional, against the current, as is the work of some of the musicians they have as a reference: John Zorn, Fank Zappa, John Cage or Walter Thompson. MIS stands out for its ability to interact with spaces, proposals and artists from other areas, such as the dancer Sol Picó. In the LEM 2018 they will present 10siMIS, a show that explores the relationship between music and words in the context of led improvisation, featuring the participation of the poets ria Martínez-Vernis and Oriol Sauleda.

In 2015, she released the book of poems Moviment de pell i escates, preamble of a show mixing dance, sonic experimentation, poetry and visual arts.

JASON KOLÀR (Barcelona)

Friday 26th d’ooctubre, 21h

CENTRE CÍVIC CONVENT DE SANT AGUSTÍ

Comerç 36

ticket 7€ (2 concerts)

The international press did not hesitate in comparing Cristian Subirà’s music with the works of the ambient guiding stars such as Dominique Lawalrée o Vini Reilly. We add to this the fact that his delicate and introspective pieces would have shined in the catalogue of the mythic label Em:t. The thousandth reincarnation of this unique creator is Jason Kolàr (Subirà has been member of collective projects: Dead Man on Campus, Coconot, Narwhal and Maresme, and solo projects: Summer Recreation Camp, Nubian Deli, Venessa Milano or Tim Robertson). As Jason Kolàr he has just released two references with the labels Stroom and Absent Tapes. A weightless and reflexive music that describes emotional landscapes of a mysterious and ethereal peace, both melancholic and delicate, built upon an impalpable tissue of intangible melodies.

DANIELE LEDDA & EMANUELE BARDI (Cagliari)

Friday 26th d’octubre, 22h

CENTRE CÍVIC CONVENT DE SANT AGUSTÍ

Comerç 36

ticket 7€ (2 concerts)

Musician Daniele Ledda and video-artist Emanuele Bardi have gattered together in order to recreate in an audio-visual performance the painting from the Italian renaissance La Città Ideale, of uncertain attribution, a paradigm of the rational planning of the urban space under philosophical and scientific criteria, eventually an expression of the anthropocentric vision of the world that prevailed at that time. The project consists in a video-mapping work by Bardi on a copy of the original paint, together with the electro-acoustic music composed by Ledda and played with the self-constructed Clavius 36, holding 36 keys, two strings to be pulsed with a bow, a digital keyboard and a programmable DSP. The performance starts with an adherence to the original vision of the painting and it is gradually decomposed towards the present moment of the man and his vision of the world.

SEVERINE BEATA (+ JAVI ÁLVAREZ) (Málaga / Santiago de Compostela)

Saturday 27th October, 21:30h

ALMO2BAR

Bruniquer 59-61

CLOSING NIGHT

ticket 7€ (2 concerts)

The demos Pulchra Est (2013) and Amica Mea (2014), as well as the self-produced record De Rerum Natura (2015), were Severine Beata’s the letters of introduction, alter ego of Marta P. Corchs (Pianobomba, Chin Yi), until this year Repetidor Disc released El ojo brillante, the brilliant record that she will present at the LEM. This record, produced by Javi Álvarez (Fluzo, Dúo Cobra, Néboa), is a plea in support of analogic synthesizers. For this reason, the producer will be another musician on stage. No programmed music layers (What is this, a karaoke!?), is Severine Beata’s principle statement. The wide dynamics of analogic synthesizers suits well to this playful and evocative music (sometimes a pure film noir/SF soundtrack), that carries us from Tom Dissevelt and the Barrons up to the humour of Der Plan.

MAR PAREJA (Granada)

Saturday 27th October, 22:30h

ALMO2BAR

Bruniquer 59-61

CLOSING NIGHT

ticket 7€ (2 concerts)

If you listened to the distorted guitar introduction to Omega, one of the best popular music records ever, you would not forget it. These are Mar Pareja’s guitars, founder member and composer of Lagartija Nick, the band that signed that album with cantaor Enrique Morente. They met again at the record Val del Omar, fully composed by the guitarist, in which the band shifted to electronics, a working material that has increasingly raised the interest of Mar Pareja until the release of the first record of his solo career, Disonancia, a demonstration of electronic rock full of rhythm urgencies and resources austerity, that becomes terribly addictive from the first listening. Instrumental music that works as a swirl moving forward while it spins; a poisonous, inexorable and never-ending dance.
