MACBA Auditori

Plaça dels Àngels, 1

(TRIBUTE TO JOAN SAURA)

nuno_rebelo_anna_subiranaLEM 2013 starts out with a homage by one of the most rich and unclassifiable music scenes of this city to one of the most brilliant musicians of that same generation: Joan Saura, whom left us in October last year. Opening LEM with this special evening is the festival’s tribute to Saura, whom collaborated with and participated in the festival since its first edition, and to that entire extraordinary generation. Two of Joan’s closest friends and collaborators Anna Subirana (voice) and Nuno Rebelo (guitar) present the project that will kindle the fire: voice and Portuguese guitar that dialogue compositionally with an audiovisual structure and the poetry of  Wisława Szymborska and Hans Magnus Enzensberger.

This septet is a reunion of some of the most daring and experimented musicians of barcelona’s free music scene and a conglomerate of experiences in the musical trajectory of Joan Saura. Rafael Zaragoza (guitar), Liba Villavecchia (sax), Agustí Martínez (sax and clarinet), Eduard Altaba (double bass), Ramón Solé (guitar), Xavi Tort (trumpet) and Quicu Samsó (drums), that have been travel companios in Saura’s artistic carreer in recent decades.  A few months ago they locked themselves in Guille Pérez’s Bonsó studio to record an album released by Picap and presented in this concert. It’s entitled Joan and apart from paying homage to a lost friend is an exceptional reunion of essential musicians. We’ll all be there.

We find ourselves in the middle of a wasteland; some speakers are transmitting abandoned recordings from the past, possibly a residual emission with no recipient. We submerge ourselves in the wall of noise with our eyes closed, while we lean against the frequencies and float down the miasma stream. Fruit of the international collaboration between Gràcia Territori Sonor and TiConZero we are visited by these veterans of Italy’s experimental/power electronics scene: Simon Balestrazzi (founding member of the mythical TAC and Kirlian Camera) and Corrado Altieri (Uncodified, Monosonik), Candor Chasma revisit and rewrite the old school industrial sound from a forward thinking perspective but using analogical methods. A project as cerebrally stimulating as is dangerous and psychedelic.

The ultimate isolationist band, the cult band among cult bands, their legend is shrouded in mystery. Nominally part of the British post-industrial scene of the early 80’s, this is a project which genuinely occupies a genre which is solely inhabited by them. Although prolific in creativity they seldom play live: in fact this show at LEM is their first ever in Spain. Their musical aesthetic is the meeting point between futurism and primitivism, atmospheres that place us in industrial landscapes of an extinguished civilization, where buzzing machinery, rusty textures, decadent echoes and post apocalyptic rites coexist in harmony. Without a doubt a once-in-a lifetime opportunity.

Attention! This activity doesn’t appear in LEM’s printed programme: it’s a concert by Berta Puigdemasa (processed harp) who is currently resident artist of Gràcia Territori Sonor together with the audiovisual work of videoartist and director Gonzalo Marcuzzi as the inaugural activity of World Space Week which will take place in Barcelona from next Friday. The collaboration of Gràcia Territori Sonor with the Spaii collective has made this delicatessen possible for the followers of LEM. A very special   “off”. Puigdemasa was also one of the residents of the Eclíptica project this 2013 at the Observatori Astronòmic de Castelltallat. This residency program proposes composers the adventure of exploring both the cosmos and the territory. This is also the spirit of World Space Week this year as the central theme for the Week is: “Exploring Mars. Discovering Earth” Puigdemasa and Marcuzzi will propose us the sensorial adventure of the distance that separates us from -or rather that unites us with- Mars: 54,6 million kilometers.

That three of their members coincided in the Spanish post rock pioneers Camping give us few signals of what will happen this night. Controlled chaos, noisy electro and rock sensibility in even parts sustained by the marrying of traditional rock instrumentation (guitars, bass, drums) and electronic elements (sequencers, toy drum machines and samplers). Distorted voices are used as another instrument, proclaiming repetitive and provocative lyrics in Catalan. On this occasion they will present themselves with Com començar una guerra (Music or Nothing, 2012) behind them, coming with the promise of a physical and visceral war, avoiding the decorative or the explicative. We’ll have the opportunity to experience their vertigo and chaos tactics in a live setting.

François Cambuzat is an old acquaintance in Barcelona’s avantrock scene owing to his incendiary incursions with L’Enfance Rouge. Together with Italian Gianna Greco (Muffx, Shotgun Babies) they present us their child: an impossible mix between avantrock and techno/dubstep. With more than 700 shows in Europe Africa and Asia since its inception Putan Club is an artistic resistance cell, iconoclastic and violent, groovy and sexy. Their modus operandi is based on guerrilla assaults: from an art gallery in New York to a Bosnian squat to a Japanese discotheque. A post-modern violation of Birthday Party’s legacy by the most brutal electronic music with influences from contemporaneous classical music. A demonstration of adaptability, survival and overcoming.

Resident of Gràcia Territori Sonor this year, the always restless Marc O’Callaghan has the habit of surprising us every time. Recent examples are his performance at the  Astronomical Observatory of Castelltallat in the marc of the Eclíptica project or his performance at Sónar festival. In contrast to other contemporaneous electronic artists absorbed by exercises of sterile perfection, each show is different. And at the same time all are unmistakably Coàgul. Riding on a pulsing mass of rhythmic noise, this industrial Virgil invokes anthemic and minimalistic processions, with a soul which is esoteric, black metal and punk in equal parts. With his vinyl La Roda de la Justícia (Màgia Roja, 2013) just around the corner, he comes to us in a radiant moment. A light so bright that it burns the World.

Lately on the lips of Europe’s experimental intelligentsia, Puce Mary is the moniker of Danish musician Frederikke Hoffmeier. Closely related with the punk scene of her native city, she has evolved from her first tapes and records on Posh Isolation label- that flowed along minimalist parameters- to an overflowing torrent of creativity nonetheless full of nuances. Although her trajectory is relatively short, through collaborations and in her solo work Puce Mary has transited from poetic musique concrète to pure drones to the harsh and rhythmic industrial sound of her latest shows. Which of those nuances she will showcase on this night is the question we’re waiting to resolve.

The day dedicated to the Luigi Russolo Sound Art Competition has a jam-packed program that starts in the morning: come to the MACBA’s auditorium at 11 am to listen to the finalists’ pieces and vote for the Audience Award.  In the evening the concert by Entre Vifs, a project that evolved from the legendary power electronics masters Le Syndicat (French band that shared the same scene as Mauricio Bianchi, Ramaleh or Merzbow) whom influenced artists from the original gabber scene up to Aphex Twin. Le Syndicat underwent a gradual transformation born of their ever-growing experience with self-made Russolo-inspired instruments which eventually led to the birth of Entre Vifs in 1986: one of the most original projects of sonic maximalism of the world.

macrobukkake

Macrobukkake has irrupted on the scene with Landscape of your brain (Bankrobber, 2012), a melting pot where one can find anything from cosmic hip hop mixed with Caribbean jazz and electronics to psychedelic guitars that caress your pineal gland and lashes of dub that keep us firmly on the ground. And nonetheless deep down the songs are still exploratory dance pop tracks-albeit very strange and tremendously eclectic pop. In fact all this usually happens simultaneously during the course of a single song without ever sounding pastiche, quite the opposite; they have a musical language of their own. Although this is the product of their creative core David Cabello and Óscar Martorell they will play live with an extended formation which will allow them to replicate the layers of their complex and exotic first album.

Their show at LEM 2006 was one of the most celebrated concerts of any edition. This time around these Austrian geniuses of the most advanced experimental rock will return bringing with them deep basses, sometimes with dub flavour, which are the bedrock for their guitarist/synthesizer’s riffs composed of rhythmic bursts of white noise, buzzes, crackles and feedback which links them directly with IDM sound (after all their drummer is a Fennesz collaborator). Despite their amazing precision they have an organic quality that a DJ can never achieve- not very far from what Can would have done if they had been inspired by Autechre or Pan Sonic instead of the Velvet Underground or Stockhausen.

A free improvisation duo with a very idiosyncratic style owed to the experience of its two components. On one hand Ángel Ontalva (October Equus) whom has developed a singular guitar style using alternative tunings, electronic manipulation and languages from other musical cultures-particularly oriental and Arabic-. For decades he has been playing music that ranges from free improvisation to experimental music to avant-jazz-rock and world music. On the other hand Vasco Trilla is a drummer and percussionist based in Barcelona with a broad curriculum in the free improvisation scene and is a prominent member of Barcelona’s free music scene as a regular collaborator in a myriad of projects with strong ties to the Polish and Portuguese free improv scenes.

PERUCHO’S (Barcelona)

peruchos

To talk about Perucho’s is to talk about the living history of daring music in this country. Their shows in the 70’s speak of an improvised rock-more free than jazz- that reached unprecedented assaults of noise. Later they started mixing composition with improvisation. Their cubist music seems to come from a parallel dimension. Perucho’s are a legend. Surprise and the unsuspected have remained as their main distinctive qualities. Their line-up and music have undergone innumerable changes and hiatus, their most recent reunion to commemorate the re-release of their one and only record (La Olla Express, 2011) has had Oriol Perucho (drums), Oriol Pons de Vall (sax and keys) and Enric Cervera (double bass) as protagonists and has led into a few select performances. It is a luxury to have them at LEM.

Sei Miguel is a renowned Portuguese trumpeter, director and jazz composer. He’s a sui generis artist with three decades of experience that has developed a method of conducting which allows him to treat sound in all its wide spectrum- sometimes with weird solutions- frequently through electronic treatments. As a trumpeter inseparable from his pocket trumpet he flows through the entire history of jazz without prejudice or distinctions. His Unit Core is a quartet composed of collaborators that have been playing with him for years: the magnificent Fala Mariam on alto trombone, Pedro Gomes on electric guitar and the virtuoso César Burago on percussions. An invitation to experience the most precise randomness and freedom.

pro13pag17-24

The Àgape laboratory has been exploring the occult practice of synaesthesia several years now with a warning that reads: do not try this at home. This time the ceremony will once again immerse itself in darkness exploring the esoteric facets of futurist painter Luigi Russolo author of the L’Arte dei Rumori manifesto (The art of noises) which is in its centennial year. A centennial  we fear won’t be celebrated by the cultural institutions of the country. Even so, Gràcia Territori Sonor has dedicated an important part of its efforts to do so this 2013 and the culmination will be with Marco Bellonzi and Coàgul (Marc O’Callaghan) in the Àgape gastronomical-metaphysical-conceptual initiation ritual that brings the spectator closer to a syncretic experience in which viands, sounds, aromas and subliminal images provoke a vivid synaesthesia.

The Impronits project always surprises but sometimes it rewards us with a truly memorable experience such as the joining of these particular three great improvisers. The shockwaves of the earthquake they generated were so strong that we -both the artists and ourselves- were compelled to repeat the event. The curriculum of Eduard Altaba, Adele Madau and Marc Egea in the field of improvisation is long, collaborating with people like John Zorn, Butch Morris or Tim Hodgkinson. Egea is a renowned innovator of the hurdy gurdy, Madau explores the possibilities of the electrified violin and Altaba possesses a wide expressive repertoire with the double bass. Classical contemporaneous music, lyrical, mysterious and magical, they had an instantaneous connection and an intense communication between them. If you didn’t see them the first time don’t miss this perhaps unrepeatable opportunity.

It would be simplistic and unfair to refer to Charles Hayward solely as the drummer, singer and keyboard player of the mythical This Heat. He connected the then uncomunicated vessels of the punk, progressive, industrial and experimental music scenes and since then he has developed a fruitful career both solo and with bands such as Massacre, Camberwell Now and even as a member of Gong for a period. The essence of his solo work truly captures the spirit of This Heat, to which he contributed so intensely, and shares his unmistakable voice-overwhelming and exalted- and complex and hypnotic drumming over which he triggers drones and psychedelic sounds somewhere between orchestral krautrock, zen post-punk and delirious world music.

vinfonies

Gràcia Territori Sonor was invited by the Vinfonies collective of Vilafranca del Penedès in 2012 to select the composers for their wine-tasting and deep listening sessions that year. This year Vinfonies will also take place in Barcelona within LEM. Five composers of different backgrounds and very diverse styles: Javier Navarrete, Susana López, Rafael Zaragoza, Ignacio Lois and Albert Guitart, have each created compositions for a particular wine donated by the producers that support this project. The pieces will be presented in public in tasting sessions for small groups in a space in accord with the seclusion and sensory research that this experiment requires: the refectory of Gràcia’s Claustre de Sant Felip Neri. We’ll sample each of the five wines while listening to the pieces composed specially for each of them. Don’t miss it.

This is a concert that will vindicate space and time through the meeting of Annette Krebs and Gouyko. Krebs’ work as a guitarist and electroacoustic composer explores the specific properties of the space in which it is produced.  Over 20 years she has developed a precise technique for the prepared guitar and is considered to be one of the best current improvisers with her instrument. Gouyko is the alias of Wenceslau Guarro i Nogués, improviser (he played an incredible show with sax.org at LEM 2010) and is the organist of churches Capuchinos de Sarriá and Santa María Auxiliadora. His mission: to free the organ from religious or stylistic constraints and present it as just another instrument. Both will meet in the Santa Maria’s church in Gràcia for this concert.

One of the best reasons to attend any LEM concert is that one can expect the unexpected. For the closing day of this present edition we have for starters a recent discovery of the local exploratory scene. With a name that hints their passion for the geekiest information technology- it’s the name of a programming language- for Ramon Casamajó and Ferran Gavin (trumpet, guitar and electronics) who have experience in more conventional formations like Hitabaldaäs and Nordapp, this is their outlet for their love for free creativity, improvisation and experimental electronics. Their aesthetic runs through floating and trippy landscapes mixed with blocks of noise in a natural and surprising way.

For this show we’ll have to prepare for a descent to hell. We’ll be guided through them by Kike and Riegla, also known as C-Utter, armed with a violin, electronics, contact mics, assorted metallic objects and anguished voices. They define themselves as a cross between the Einstürzende Neubauten industrial school and the DIY anarcho-punk essence of Crass. We should add that besides being revolutionary and subversive, their concerts are truly a ritual. C-Utter make a guerrilla sabbat- raw and refined at the same time- full of details. We experienced it in the flesh at their mesmerizing show in LEM Emanacions 2011, where they presented us their particular adaptation of Val del Omar’s surreal work, Fuego en Castilla, from their vinyl split with Electrozombies.

A project heavily inspired by William Bennett’s fascination for Haitian vaudou, deploying Central African percussion in radical new ways, generating an intense sound unrivalled in its physical and emotional intensity. The name was derived  from the song Cut Hands Has The Solution by his original Whitehouse project. 2011 marked the Cut Hands debut release, the critically acclaimed and best- selling Afro Noise I album, since followed by Black Mamba on Blackest Ever Black in 2012, and 2013’s incredible Madwoman on Downwards. The distinctive Cut  Hands art aesthetic and design is provided by vévé artist Mimsy DeBlois, whose amazing paintings feature on several Cut Hands covers and live posters. Cut Hands music has also featured in many films including Siberia: Krokodil Tears (2011), Inside Syria (2011), Kings Of Cannabis (2013), Snoop Dogg’s movie  Reincarnated (2012), and Julien Temple’s Glastonbury (2012).
